The best time to switch is usually in the 14 days before your contract ends, ideally during spring or fall when offers tend to be lowest. Here's how to time it.
Rule 1: switch before your contract ends
Texas rules let you change provider without an early termination fee if you switch within 14 days before your fixed-rate contract expires. Your provider must also send an expiration notice in advance, typically 30 to 60 days before the end date.
If you do nothing, most providers move you to a month-to-month variable rate, which is often well above the best offers. That's one of the most common reasons behind a sudden jump in your bill.
Find your end date on your latest bill, in your online account or on your contract documents, then set a reminder about three weeks before.
Rule 2: shop in spring or fall if you can
Retail offers follow wholesale expectations. Prices tend to be lower in the mild "shoulder" months, roughly March to May and October to November, and higher heading into summer, when demand peaks. Signing a 12-month contract in spring locks in a lower price that then carries you through the next summer.
If your contract happens to end in July, consider a shorter bridge plan or a term that ends in the spring, so that future renewals line up with cheaper months.

12-month plans usually offer the best price. Longer terms (24–36 months) protect you from future increases, which is worth considering after a year of rising prices; shorter terms give flexibility. Whatever you choose, aim for an end date in spring or fall.
Switching when you move
Moving is a natural time to switch. Texas rules generally let you end a contract without a termination fee when you move, as long as you give notice and proof of your new address. At your new home, sign up a week or two before your move-in date so service starts on time. You'll need the new address's ESI ID, which any provider can find from the address.
